The Silver Oak Production Olympics

By Nate Weis

Picture this: Winemakers tossing gasket rings, cellar workers engaged in a barrel rolling relay, and directors battling it out in a wine hose tug of war. Welcome to the inaugural Production Olympics at Silver Oak, where the entire department—across all brands of the Family of Silver Oak—came together for a day of camaraderie, competition and, of course, wine.

The vision of viticulturist Allison Bettis and orchestrated by executive assistant Kathleen Scanlon, the event exemplified our dedication to nurturing a collaborative and innovative team ethos. With 85 participants ready to showcase their skills and spirit, the stage was set for an unforgettable day.

A Toast to Unity: Why the Olympics?

At Silver Oak, we don’t just work together; we strive to become the most collaborative, innovative and healthy team in the wine business. Our “Just Cause” statement isn’t just a vision—it’s a way of life. With team members spread across different locations and backgrounds, building trust and familiarity is essential.

That’s where the Production Olympics came in. By stepping outside the normal work environment and engaging in friendly competition, we got a glimpse of each other’s true nature. Teams were mixed up to encourage interaction among colleagues who may not typically work together. Laughter, cheers, and high-fives filled the air as we discovered what makes each of us tick.

From Vineyard to Victory: The Games Begin

The lineup of events was as diverse as our team itself. From the wine bottle gasket ring toss to the bung toss, every game was designed to challenge both body and mind. Mixed teams tackled bucket stacking relays and macrobin flipping with gusto, showcasing our collective determination and resilience.

As the competition heated up, so did the camaraderie. Those who may have barely known each other beforehand found themselves cheering on newfound teammates and sharing laughs over shared struggles. It was a day where titles and hierarchies took a backseat to the bonds forged through shared experiences and shared goals.

Embracing Eccentricity: A Culture of Support

At Silver Oak, we’re fortunate to work in an environment where creativity and unorthodoxy are celebrated. Our leadership’s unwavering support for events like the Production Olympics underscores their belief in the power of teamwork and connection. “Investing in our team’s well-being today pays dividends in the years to come,” Proprietor David R. Duncan says.

So, as the torch was passed, medals were awarded and bottles of wine were raised in celebration, we couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to come together as a team. The inaugural Production Olympics may have been a day of frivolity, but its impact on our team spirit and cohesion will resonate for years to come.

Here, it’s not just about making exceptional wine—it’s about building exceptional teams. And with events like the Production Olympics, we’re raising the bar not just for ourselves, but for the entire wine industry. Cheers to teamwork, camaraderie, and the pursuit of excellence!
